Fred O'Leary and his Woodcarvings

This website is dedicated to the memory of Frederick Lee O'Leary. He was born in Tell City, Indiana on January 28th, 1954.

Fred was a self taught artist who almost performed miracles in some of his work. He could take a piece of wood and work with it and make it into something very beautiful and sometimes realistic.

One of several life-size Lion's heads that he made as well as full size Lions. He was best known for his carvings of birds, Carousel Horses. He had a great love for animals and nature, which reflected in his carvings and life. His love for life was his inspiration for all his work.

This website will contain photographs of his work (and play). We will have a total of 3 pages on this website when completed.

Fred spent several years in Fells Point in Baltimore, Maryland. He had a small shop there for awhile next to the Cat's Eye Pub where he became well known for his carvings and replicas and his eccentric personality.

This is one of many of his carvings of the Cat's Eye Logo. He also was very good at antique repair and restoration, which he did a great deal of for the local businesses in the Fells Point and Baltimore area.

While Fred lived in Fells Point, this was just a couple of his Alaskan Malamute puppies which grew up there and later pulled him on ski's down the streets of Fells Point. He was filmed with his grown dogs and other activities on the local Television and in newspaper articles. He enjoyed showing his artistic and playful nature to people.

This is a prime example of his artistic mind and vision. He took 9 1/2 acres of bottom land that stayed unsold for a long time due to too much labor and work involved. He almost singlehandedly turned this into an artists vision, even though he was not able to completely finish it.

This cabin is only a small part of what he did. He designed and built several small catfish ponds and landscaped it so that it lay on the crude land like a picture. He had dreams of a catfish farm
.

This is one of the snow sculptures that Fred made one winter in Baltimore on Charles Street several years ago. These were shown on Television also.

Fred died of cancer on December 15th, 2002.

We are actively looking for photographs of items that Fred made. He had a shop in Baltimore, Maryland for several years.
